Meltdown and Spectre impact on LibreHealth

I haven’t been in the habit of issuing notice ahead of time, but in this case, it is possible. On Tuesday or Wednesday, we will need to reboot every server we manage to update their kernels to mitigate the Meltdown and Spectre CPU vulnerabilities. These will come with performance hits that we cannot get around.

Since these vulnerabilities are present in the processors themselves, there is nothing that can be done short of mitigating the damage. Meltdown can be mitigated and is the one that will cause the performance hits; Spectre is a bit harder to mitigate and fix and will be around for a long time.

I might also take the time on Tuesday or Wednesday to add more memory to the VM hosting the Forums, the server is struggling.

I have applied all the updates and rebooted all the servers.
